Childhood Journal Excerpts - Ages 12-15

Today I'll be sharing some of the words I wrote during the fraught ages of 12 to 15.

-

01/08/01 (age 12)
I wish: I could meet NSYNC in person, I were skinnier, [a specific boy] would like me, I had bigger boobs, I had more wishes.
This is what makes me sad: Lots
This is what makes me angry: my brother
These things make me nervous: TESTS, performances/concerts, everything
This is what I do when I am moody: listen to music
This is what makes me jealous: friends, brother
These things scare me the most: tornadoes, fire
Things that I would NOT change about myself: I dunno… My blonde-ness?
Things that I can change about myself: Nothing! I’m hopeless!
I just got a free plane ticket to my dream place. Where am I going: Hawaii and Paris, France.
What different jobs would I like to try? Author/illustrator, interior designer, teacher, cartoonist, artist?, singer, actress

[This was a journal that had questions to fill out at the front. The above were my answers.]

02/10/01
We drove to St. Joe’s Mercy Hospital – the same place I was born in, just to rule out appendicitis for sure. We went to the pediatric urgent care, where about a million and five doctors and nurses talked to me. Finally, the main doctor came in. “Andrea, I’m pretty sure you have appendicitis, except that you’re hungry." (My stomach kept growling) ... I would’ve been scared out of my mind, besides the fact that they had given me fast-working calming medicine. (OK, I admit it, I was scared out of my wits, until I was in the waiting-to-go-into-surgery-room. Then I wasn’t so scared. I think God calmed me. By the time they gave me the medication, I really didn’t need it.)

05/09/01
Today I captured the [floppy] disk [two of my female friends] traded back and forth and [another friend] and I looked at it. Now we know the feeling is mutual. We both think the others are bitches, so why do we act like best friends in fifth and sixth hours? I guess “birds of a bitchy feather flock together,” huh?

[Yeah. That's right. We traded notes on FLOPPY DISKS to each other in middle school. Because we were awesome.]

01/21/02 (age 13)
I’ve been busy. But I should be busy for the Lord, not too busy to worship Him or read His Word.

12/14/02
6 days until I’m 14! Yayful! High School rox! Ninth grade iz DA BOMB! Still no period. I currently don’t like anyone. I am SCARED about finals… they start one month from today!!! I have contacts. I want a perm. I’m like 130 pounds and I am SO HUGE. I hate my looks.

01/01/03 (age 14)
New Year’s Resolutions for 2003:
1) “Whatever is good, noble, pure, think about such things.” – God can see your thoughts. Would he like them?
2) “Cast all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.” 1 Peter 5:7 – Don’t worry! Guys like you. But would you be allowed to date them anyway? No. Chill. Your period’s going to come. (Why do you want it so bad?) Do your best… God will do the rest. You’re not going to fail finals, get into a bad college, etc.
3) Don’t be so hard on yourself. You are not: stupid, fat, ugly, a failure, bad. Everybody doesn’t hate you. God loves you – so why can’t you love yourself?
4) Remember – do onto others as you would like done onto you. This includes: your brother, your friends, your enemies. Try to like people you don’t currently like.
5) Get a job.
6) Exercise.
7) WITNESS to others.
They say you should pick one and stick to it, but life’s an ongoing process, right?

I will never, ever, ever partake in drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, pre-marital sex, and parties at which the above are being partook in by others. I will save my body for my future husband. I will keep my mind and body pure. I will try to act as Jesus would.

05/27/03
I’m mad at [my friend] ‘cause she says she’s too stressed out about her whole parents-getting-divorced-ordeal-thing that she’s QUITTING softball. But then, I can’t be mad at her, ya know? I need to be sympathetic and supportive, but I don’t know how to do that?! Wah! What can I do? What should I do? And meanwhile, I have homework, and finals, and softball, and my dad’s job/our family’s money problems to worry about! Not like it is my problem, but she’s my BFF, so it kinda is my problem, ya know? I’m just confused.

10/05/03
Even though I’m spending sophomore year eating lunch with my Pre-Calc book instead of my friends, they won’t forget me. On Wednesday, we had a half day, so we all went to [a friend]’s house and hung out. My friends won’t forget about me just because they don’t see me in school anymore. I was silly to worry. In fact, minus my scary math teacher and a lonely 40 minutes with me and my lunch bag, this year might not be so terrible after all. If only I could take gym in the summer…

01/04/04 (age 15)
Is it over yet?
Stress stress stress keep there not cool go away
So much to do
I don’t want to do it
No!
Am I ugly?
Am I too shy?
Why does no one like me?
How can I become more outgoing?
How can I be better at making new friends?
Too bad they don’t teach that stuff in a class…

03/04
I’m not perfect. I’ll never be perfect. But try telling my brain that. I’ve been told all my years that I’m capable; I can be anything I want to be. So I have to be everything I can be. That’s what I’m capable of. Anything less is disappointment. I don’t want to disappoint anyone. Then I would fail. And that proves I’m not perfect or I’m below what I’m capable of. And I’m on this high road from a young age and all the adults do is compliment you and so I’m on this high road and the only thing I can do is go down. And fail. But I’m scared to fail. Then I’m not perfect. Impossible. And I can’t get a boyfriend because 1.) I’m too shy and 2.) I don’t have time for one. I’m too shy because I’m scared of saying something that would make me seem imperfect. Again, I fail. It’s just better to keep my mouth shut. I don’t have time because I’m too busy overachieving – that’s what I’m capable of, so I have to do it. Oh yeah, and 3.) Nobody likes me. But I attribute the whole no-asking-out thing to my shyness again. Because I’ve been told my whole life that I am beautiful, that people would die for my hair thickness and color, and that I’m pretty. I believe it. And whenever I have a zit or my hair looks bad, or my eyes are red, or my face looks tired, again, I fail. I’m a failing fool. Just failing. Over and over.

06/20/04
Wow. Time flies, doesn’t it? I can remember turning 10 and thinking it was a huge deal to turn a double digit. I never thought I’d be 13 – it was too far off. Then I became a teenager, blah blah blah. Now I’m learning to drive. DRIVE. A thing, a monumental thing, landmark thing in a person’s life, right up there with first boyfriend (still waiting), being able to vote, going to college, etc. No wonder I was nervous that first day of driving. It’s not like I crashed or almost did, but I still thought my driving skills were less-than-adequate. The perfectionist in me was upset. I cried. Right there in front of [the driving instructor] and my brother and the other driver. Me, who shows no emotion in public! AARGH!

I’m a JUNIOR! Time flies… I can remember starting high school like it was yesterday. The excitement. The nerves. OMG. There’s three of them. High schools. They are SO BIG. I’m in HIGH SCHOOL! I’m all grown up! Ha. Now I’m already halfway through high school! Is the glass half empty or half full? Sometimes, most of the time, I think OMG, when is the future going to come already? But then there’s times like these when you think OMG, I’m not ready. I’m 15, and I think I’m cool, and I’m ready for the future, and college, and a job. But I’m NOT! I’m pathetic! It’s a crisis if my fave TV show collides with my part time job. I can’t get a boyfriend. And I’m sitting here rambling when I should be asleep. I don’t know. I’m confused again. What was I talking about? Time flying, I suppose. Well, it does. I should get over it. Time’s not just going to stop or slow down because I’m not ready.

07/04
I wish my life were a remote control. Things going too fast? Slow-motion, or even pause. Take a 24 hour nap, then resume play. Or rewind to do a day or two over and fix your mistakes. Fast-forward if [a teacher] is lecturing again. What? Second hour’s over already? Wanna scream? Volume up. Don’t wanna be heard? Mute. Change your appearance? Move up a channel, go back to previous. Wanna be someone else? Record their life for a day. Zoom in. But if you look fat, go back to standard. Just never hit that big red power button. Don’t end your life! You can stop for a time to collect your thoughts or unwind. But never say power off. It probably won’t turn on again.

11/04
It’s a bittersweet moment knowing that this is as good as it’s gunna get. It’ll all come down soon. I’m glad, so glad, for all the fun I’ve had but also I’m sad, so sad, because there’s only one more week and then Our Town is over. Can’t we suspend this moment? Can’t I relive this life over and over again? I don’t want life to continue. Can’t it just stop for a moment? Can’t I just breathe? Can’t I keep doing this and having fun before reality comes back to stay? I wanna suspend this moment in time…

[I had a bit part in the high school production of Our Town. Drama club always swept me off my feet and gave me a bit of escape for awhile.]

Alright, that's enough journal sharing. These are most interesting to me, I'm sure, and perhaps mildly interesting to people who know me. But what are perfect strangers going to read this stuff for?

I did write a lot of little poems/song lyrics in my journals too, and I intend to post those tomorrow. But after that I'm done. Honest.

If I could go back in time, I would tell my middle school/high school self to:

1. Relax.

2. (As I said in yesterday's post:) Stop acting like I was anxious/worried about stuff just because I thought I was supposed to; because that's what teenagers did. Pretending to be concerned about my weight or my looks or grades or anything else just turned into REAL worries, and I think if I had only worried when I was legitimately worried anyway instead of talking myself *into* being worried about things, I might have been a bit happier.

3. Stop caring about what other people think, or trying to act like other people do in an effort to "fit in." I didn't do as much of this as a lot of my classmates probably did - mainly because I was too shy to do much - but I certainly did it in my head, where I'd be so worried about fitting in and I what I wasn't doing to facilitate that that I'd get myself all worked up.

4. Think about Christianity and God more critically. I did this at the end of high school anyway (see this previous post), but I certainly could have done it even earlier if I'd been willing to have an open mind.

Childhood Journal Excerpts - Ages 8-11

As I said yesterday, for the next couple of posts, I'm going to share a sampling of some of the words I've written throughout the years.

Below are (selected) entries from ages 8-11, in which I measured my self-worth based on my looks, weight, sexual development, clothing, material possessions, what boys thought of me, physical health, grades, and devotion to God (and fell short in every category).

-

12/14/97 (age 8)
Well, five days ‘til my birthday party and my throat is sore, my nose is stuffed up and I’m mad at my body for causing these problems

04/18/98 (age 9)
God, so much has changed. Me for one thing. I swear now. I can’t help it. Went to a rummage sale. Got lots of things. So did my crappy brother – oops. Told you I swear. Sorry, but I don’t really want to ever write in you again. Bye forever.

09/07/98
I got a TV! For 25 dollars! So now, like in the song “Part of This World” in “The Little Mermaid,” “I have everything.” Phone, TV, and bunk beds. COOL.

09/25/98
I feel… young. My best friend is getting a bra. And [another friend] already had her first period. I know I’m the youngest in my class, but still. I feel like I’m young. Really young. Every fifth grade girl is wearing a bra. Well, at least in my class. But I don’t need one yet. And I haven’t had my period. Oh well, sometimes you’re younger than you think.

10/18/98
I’m depressed. I’m not supposed to be writing this. I’m in my room, being punished. So bye, I guess.

11/19/98
I’m getting a BRA! Yes! Now I won’t feel as young! I can’t wait ‘til I get it! A BRA! Finally!

01/01/99 (age 10)
Happy New Year! [My friend] slept over on New Year's Eve. She has a boyfriend. They’ve kissed on the lips before! He gave her a $24.99, 24 karat gold heart necklace. Whoa! They are only in the fifth grade. She is almost 11. Way too young.

[I guess I thought $24.99 was really expensive??]

03/12/99
Today we saw the human development video. They gave us two pads (with wings), deodorant, Crest toothpaste, 3 shampoo packets, tablets for teeth, and two small booklets. According to one of the booklets, about two years after you start growing breasts you’ll start having periods. I’ve been growing maybe… oh, since July. About 8 months. So I have about 1 year and 4 months until I start my period. I’ll start near July 2000.

[In reality it was April 2003]

12/23/99 (age 11)
I want to love someone, but I just DON’T! Hmmmmm. [A friend] told [a boy] that she loves him. She kissed his cheek. I think about boys in general, not certain boys. I wish the boys would just grow up. [A different boy] got [a different girl] an $80.00 necklace! Solid silver chain! Wow!

[Apparently I was obsessed with how much jewelry cost?]

01/03/00
It feels weird to write 2000. I can’t believe it really is. Y2K – no problems, thank the Lord. Everyone was soooo worried. Why? Just to have nothing happen?

03/17/00
Dance today. Saw [a boy] dancing with [a girl]. No one asked me to dance. I don’t know what I’d say if they did, but I was hoping SOMEONE would. I just want to fit in. Feel loved – by someone OTHER than my pals and family. You, know, like a BOY! I knew [the aforementioned boy] hearted “her.” I just, I don’t know, thought that somehow he’d see me differently today. But no. I’m not mad. Just disappointed. Not in him. In me. Maybe someone out there does like me. I’ll hope.

04/14/00
I don’t cry when I’m injured. I don’t cry often. But today I’m a basket-case. In Social Studies right this minute I have a C. I almost cried. Grades are important to me. At least I have an A in Science. Still 8 weeks to go. I can bring it up. I hope. Being a teen is hard work, N’book. You have to worry about so many things – friends, boys, family, school, my fat belly. N’book, I weigh 100 lbs. and I am only 11. My thighs are huge! And also, I want bigger breasts.

[The "N'book" nickname came from The California Diaries book series, where Maggie, an anorexic thirteen year old, wrote in her journal about weighing too much and called her journal "N'book." I mimicked it because I thought it was cool.]

04/21/00
I have a thing with backwards lately. Maybe because my life is backwards. And inside out and upside down. Chaotic, yet calm. Rowdy, yet sensitive. Loud, yet quiet. Funny, yet serious. Moody, yet peaceful. Creative, athletic, intelligent. I’m smart, artsy, athletic. Overall, a good person. A + for being friendly. I’m a student, sister, classmate, friend, teammate, cousin, girl, artist, writer and Christian. I do my best. At least I try. But do I try hard enough?

05/03/00
I am bloated! Enormous. And I have no self-control. Tonight I ate an ice cream sandwich AND three Oreo cookies. Do you know how much fat is in those? Too much. P. S. My new motto is eat to live, not live to eat. Memo to self: MUST LOSE FOOD 2 LOSE WEIGHT!

[Still imitating that book.]

05/04/00
I may not think I’m great
May always put me down
But God really does care
And through his love he’s shown…
He is mighty
He is kind
He is Just

11/18/00 – 9:15 pm
Around 7:30, [my other grandpa] died. I never was that close to him. No word on funeral dates. Mom said that her and Dad would give us each $100 cash for Christmas – like he once did as a memory. I feel REALLY BAD saying this, but I kind of wanted him to die so I could miss school and wear my new dress, but that’s cruel. So, today I told myself to help him live a happy life the rest of his life and not to be in pain, and to be nice, and don’t will him to die. So, I did, and so did he. Die, I mean. I’m not really sad. I only saw him once in awhile. I’m not trying to sound like I don’t care, ‘cuz I do, I care about Grandma and Mom, and my uncles. How will they react?

-

If I could go back in time, I would tell my elementary/middle school self to:

1. Stop blaming myself for things that didn't go right in my life, while complimenting/praising/thanking the world (or God) when things actually did go right. I did this a lot more in middle school and high school too, but you can see it in my journal as early as eight years old. I wrote: "I’m mad at my body for causing these problems" - when I had a cold. Like it was actually my fault/my body's fault that I got sick. I still do this. I very rarely let myself actually be proud of myself and acknowledge successes, attributing my success or happiness to some outside force that just "happened" to work out for me. But then when things don't go my way, I do blame myself. It's not a healthy pattern, and it apparently started early. I'm tempted to blame Christianity (everything good is a gift from God, but anything bad is either a "test" from God or some sort of punishment I've brought on myself for falling short of what He wanted me to do) - but I think it's a bit more than that, and that Christianity was not solely to blame for that attitude I established (though it probably didn't help).

2. Stop acting like I was anxious/worried about stuff just because I thought I was supposed to; because that's what teenagers did. Pretending to be concerned about my weight or my looks or grades or anything else just turned into REAL worries, and I think if I had only worried when I was legitimately worried anyway instead of talking myself *into* being worried about things, I might have been a bit happier.

3. Stop being in such a hurry to grow up and savor my childhood more. I think everyone falls into this trap, and there's not much we can do about it, but still. It would've been nice if I'd appreciated it a bit more.

Childhood Journal Excerpts - Ages 6-7

As I mentioned yesterday, I've kept journals for years, and have recently gone through and started typing some of the more interesting entries into a Word document, so that I have the content saved elsewhere (just in case anything should happen to my journals themselves). I don't have everything typed up yet, but I do have most of my childhood/adolescence.

For the next couple of posts, I'm going to share a sampling of some of the words I've written throughout the years. (The spelling has been corrected - otherwise you'd never know what I was trying to say!)

Below are (selected) entries from ages 6 & 7. (Many were written for school assignments, so I didn't always pick the topic.)

01/05/95 (age 6)

I love my family. I am happy today. I am watching Dance Workout with Barbie. I played with Barbies. They had a wedding.

01/28/95
On the 31st, Lion King, a Disney classic movie will come out on tape. I saw Lion King in the movie theater. I really like the part where Pumbaa almost said “fart.”

04/95
Today is Easter! I love today! God has risen! Hallelujah!

09/19/95
I have a new computer! It’s just for me and my brother! It has cool stuff on it! It is really neat!

09/28/95
My best friend always plays with me. She never says no!

01/08/96 (age 7)
On Saturday I went to the hospital, not because I was hurt or sick, because, you see, my grandpa is there. He has kidney problems. Well while I was there the nurse gave me two chocolate ice creams! We watched TV there too. I got what I wanted for Christmas. I got My Size Barbie. Hooray!

[Side note - my grandpa died soon after this, but I didn't mention it in my journal until much later.]

03/19/96
My favorite planet is Pluto. I don’t know why. I just do. Oh, now I remember. I like Pluto because it’s not always the last planet. Sometimes it’s in Neptune’s orbit. Pluto has one moon, named Charon.

05/10/96
Mother’s day is on the 12th. My mother is special in these ten ways: 1. My mom cooks dinner and never complains. 2. She gives me two Twinkies and Reese’s Peanut Butter cups (3 big ones) in my lunches. 3. She drives us anywhere we want (like mini golfing or McDonalds). 4. She lets me sleep with Cocoa and Cocoa Jr. [my stuffed bears]. 5. She lets my brother and me watch TV during breakfast and dinner. 6. She helps with problems and helps solve them. 7. She says I only have to take two showers a week (I don’t like showers). 8. She gives me cookies after school! 9. She lets me eat chocolates every day 10. She lets me have Oreos any time I ask!

[I think I was hungry when I wrote that...]

05/16/96
Things I know about Michigan:
1. I live in Michigan. 2. Michigan is shaped like a mitten. 3. Michigan is not a state that is like Florida. 4. It has three sides that are by water. And finally, 5. Michigan is on top of Ohio.

05/29/96
On Memorial weekend I went to my grandma’s house. On Memorial Day my family and I went to the cemetery to see my grandpa’s grave. He died in January. It’s sad he died. He was in World War 2. He didn’t die of war, though. Once he quit he got cancer three years later. He got rid of it, got it back 15 years later, and died of cancer and kidney failure.

06/10/96
What do you want to be when you grow up? This is what I want. I want to be a… well, I want to either be an eye doctor (‘cuz my dad’s almost blind in one eye), artist, cartoonist, or an art teacher, oh, and a teacher. See, I don’t know which one, but, you see, I know it’s going to be one of them. But, I don’t know which one! If I’m going to be a teacher, well, I don’t know which grade I’d teach. Maybe I’ll just be a mom.

Future Me

So there's this really cool website called FutureMe.org that you should really check out, especially if you're at all interested in self-reflection or journaling. The concept is simple - you write whatever you want to tell your future self, pick a date in the future to send your message to, and supply them with your email address. Then, on whatever future day you picked, you get a surprise email from the past!

(You can read more about the concept here.)

I wrote myself a letter back in September 2014 to be delivered one year into the future, and I received the email a couple months ago (Sept. 2015).

I started the email by asking myself how some of my friends and family were doing. (Has so-and-so made that change they wanted to? Gotten that job/graduated/moved/etc.?) I also asked about myself:

"Am I making money from my art now? Do I have a thriving Etsy shop? Am I painting and drawing more?"

"How are my novels coming along? I'm just finishing the first two (again) this week and then I plan start looking into sending feelers out to agents and publishers while I continue on writing the rest of the series. Am I doing this?"

"Did we get a puppy? How is Tyler doing? He's about to turn 16 this year and though he's a bit blind and deaf and occasionally unsteady on his feet, he seems pretty good for almost 16!"

I was amazed at how accurate many of my predictions turned out to be. (Though they were written in question form, really they were predictions.) We did get a puppy. I did make (some) money on my art. I have started to send out query letters for my story. I did quit substitute teaching. Even mundane things came true - we did plant new trees in our backyard.

Of course, some things didn't happen - but they were all things I had little/no control over, so I can hardly be blamed. Like putting Tyler down three months shy of his seventeenth birthday. Or things I expected to happen in the lives of my family/friends that didn't (yet) pan out.

What really struck me though was the tone of the email, especially at the end. It started out innocently enough, making predictions about what might be going on in my life and the lives of those closest to me, but it ended with sort of a desperate plea that the future would be better than where I was at the time. Honestly, I sound almost legitimately depressed - but I think I was just having a really bad day on that particular September 2014 day, and that it was in fact my not feeling great and being worried about stagnancy that prompted me to write the letter in the first place. I don't think I felt like that every day.

"Tell me good news. Tell me everything is okay. At the very least, tell me that it is not ridiculous to have these dreams. Tell me I am happy, or nearly happy, or working toward being happy. Tell me something has changed - for the better - in the last 12 months that made those 12 months worth living. Tell me that all I am feeling now is just a distant memory. Tell me that life is great. And tell the truth."

It surprises me though how desperate I sounded. I guess it's good that it surprised me - because that means I haven't felt that down in awhile.

I got a little dramatic in that letter, but I've also used FutureMe for more "everyday" things - like sending myself reminders. I recently hosted a Thanksgiving dinner for my family (my first ever hosting!) and though it all turned out pretty well, there were a couple small changes I plan to do in the future, or things I wanted to remind myself about what did work best - i.e. "Make fewer desserts" and "Don't put foil on the turkey drumsticks too soon" and the recipe for the sparkling cider punch that was so delicious. So I wrote a quick email to myself with that information and sent it off to November 2016 so it'll appear in my inbox and remind me of precisely the things I wanted to remember.

I love stuff like this, though. That's sort of what these blog posts are too - memories. I don't tend to go back and reread my blogs much after I write them, but when I write in my personal journals, I do go back and reread. I have nearly forty journals (small notebooks) I've kept over the years - from my first diary in first grade (filled with atrocious spelling) to my current journal, which has a great picture of Rome on the cover and a map of the city on the back cover. Every few years, I dig all my old journals out and reread them; I'm in the process of typing them up onto my computer so I have a digital version (in case, God forbid, anything should happen to the journals someday). I don't type every word, but I type the "good stuff" - the stuff I definitely want to remember.

It's amazing to me, going back and rereading those journals, how much has changed - and how much hasn't. It's like reading about history, and how everyday people lived in ancient Rome, or what the ancient Roman emperors and philosophers wrote about. Sometimes I'm like, wow, humans have NOT changed in the last two millennia; we have exactly the same concerns and reflections and ideas now that we had back then. And other times I'm like, fuck no, life is so much better now than it was then! Ancient history sounds awful! I'm so glad that's behind us. Rereading old journals is just like that - but on a personal scale. I get a really big kick out of it.

Donate to Stop Domestic Abuse & Assault

In the past, I've volunteered at Haven, a local women's shelter for families recovering from domestic abuse. Every year they do a holiday gift-giving event where they collect donations of new clothing, winter coats, toys, board games, beauty products, electronics, etc. and let anyone who has used their services in the past year come by and take free gifts for their families. They have everything from baby toys and onesies to sporting equipment and teen-appropriate gifts like bath soaps and selfie sticks. They also have small kitchen appliances like microwaves and coffee makers. And they have a ton of donated winter coats - enough that every child gets a free winter coat.

Besides the holidays, they accept donations all year round. They're always in need of diapers and feminine hygiene products. They have strollers and clothes and toys and laundry detergent. They run a shelter, so they have to supply the families who come - often with nothing but what they were able to carry out of their homes in their arms - with all of their daily necessities.

It can be hard to find time to donate - I only helped sporadically with watching the children's play room while the mothers were in a group session down the hall until my schedule just couldn't allow it anymore - but it's easy to donate necessary items or money. Haven is working on building a new facility right now that will combine all of their resources into a single building - instead of having the shelter at one location, medical help at another, therapy at another, etc. - but all of that, of course, takes money.

What I loved most about Haven was the emphasis it put on empowerment. They can't help anyone who doesn't want to be helped; they can't drag them away from their abusive relationships kicking and screaming. They teach women how to be empowered, and how to get themselves out of the situation (instead of relying on others for help). The shelter is only there as a temporary solution - a place where they can go for financial and emotional support while they figure out the next steps they're going to take.

To those who think - but I live in a nice neighborhood, these things don't happen around me - you're wrong. I live in Oakland County, Michigan, one of the ten highest income counties in the U.S. with populations over one million people. We're surrounded by wealthy private and public schools, and colleges and universities. I don't have the specific numbers on education, but there's certainly lots of access to education for most Oakland County families. All races are represented (77% White, 13% Black, 6% Asian, 4% Hispanic/Latinx, 0.3% Native American). Oakland County has the 36th largest Asian population of any county in the country, and the 21st largest Jewish community in the nation. (All data from Wikipedia.)

As Oakland County's only comprehensive program for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, Haven provides shelter, counseling, advocacy, and educational programming to nearly 30,000 people every year.

My point is - domestic violence and abuse doesn't care if you're poor or rich, Christian or Jewish or Muslim or atheist, white or black or Asian or Hispanic, gay or straight - it effects all of us. Because it's a problem with our culture, and it permeates all demographics.

I'm sure you all have your own charities you donate to this time of year (or throughout the year), but if you don't, or if you're looking for somewhere else to help, look to Haven, or other women's shelters. Find out where your local shelter is and what they need.

And if you would like more information about domestic violence, sexual assault, or child abuse - and what forms these things can take or what exactly it looks like, Haven has a great resource page.
