Tulip Bouquet on Purple Ground

This is one of my favorite color schemes I've used on a 5"x7" colored pencil drawing. In the original photograph, the background was yellow/brown (the bouquet was in a vase on a kitchen counter), but I changed it to purple, so that it would be a "secondary triad" color scheme.

On the color wheel, colors that are across from each other are complementary (red and green, orange and blue, yellow and violet), and colors that create an equilateral triangle are a "triad." There's a primary color triad of red-yellow-blue, and a secondary color triad of orange-green-violet.

The secondary color triad is my favorite. Red-yellow-blue can look a little bit like a Kindergarten classroom (or a Mondrian painting), and orange-green-violet feels fresher. It's a great color scheme for a springtime scene like these tulips!
